In the Beginning. . .

On November 4, 2000 we became sheep farmers!  We purchased 3 bred ewes from Gary and Margaret Walters of Spring Hill Farms in Port Ludlow, WA.

We met the Walters at the Clark County Fair in August of the same year.  They were the first "real" romney shepherds that we could grill with questions.  While standing in the sheep barn on the fair grounds, we picked their brains on fencing, shelter, hoof care, you name it.  I was impressed with the care they used in handling the sheep.  In October we visited their farm and picked out the ewes.  Again we asked questions and again they patiently answered.  We picked out two pure white romney ewes that happened to be twins (Martha and Molly) and then one white B factored ewe (Betsy), for no other reason than she has a great personality.  The girls had to stay with the Walters for another month to give them time with the ram.

The Walters delivered the sheep and walked us through the basics of trimming hooves, giving vaccinations, worming,  and treating for lice, etc.

If you're contemplating purchasing sheep -- ask questions!  I have yet to meet a "sheep person", that wasn't extremely helpful and friendly.  Whether in person or over the internet, shepherds who love sheep, love to share and help others with their sheep too.
